In 2 Chronicles 11, we see two aspects of Rehoboam's management of the nation and his home.

On the national level, we see Rehoboam demonstrating his vision and ability in building and managing the kingdom (vv. 5-17) in the early days of his rule. He built strong cities in Judah. He put military commanders in them, and stored grain, oil, and wine. He put shields and spears in every city and made the cities very strong. Even the priests and Levites from all over Israel were on his side.

However, when it comes to his family (vv. 18-23), he shows us his injustice and selfishness. He had 18 wives and 60 concubines who bore him 28 sons and 60 daughters. He did not love his wives equally, favouring one over the other. Because he favoured Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, he appointed Maacah’s son as the next king of Judah.

We also see that he scattered some of his sons throughout Judah and Benjamin. He gave them plenty of food and took many wives for them. Although verse 23 says he dealt wisely with this one matter, his purpose is questionable. It is not surprising that the kingdom almost fell apart in chapter 12.

It reminds us of the importance of home in our lives. I Timothy 3:4, 5 says, “He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? This verse tells us that if we can't even manage our own homes well, how can we be effective leaders?

As parents, my wife and I never let busy work or church ministry detract from the quality time with our two children. We believe that they are the two little disciples God has given us to prioritize. It is our first responsibility as parents is to raise them well and lead them to God's truth.

Today, God calls us to be good and faithful stewards in our families first and foremost (I Timothy 3:4, 5) and only then will we be able to serve more effectively in His church and kingdom.

Pray : Dear Father, thank you for giving us families. Please help us to manage our family and spend quality time with our children. May we lead them in your truth and love. Amen.
