On Thursday morning (11 April 2024), my mother-in-law passed away peacefully in her sleep, marking the end of a life deeply rooted in family values and faith. I was tasked with delivering the final eulogy to her during the crematorium service.

She was a typical traditional Chinese woman who deeply cared for her family. She worked hard, saved money, and generously supported her children when they needed help. When I first met her, I did not make a good impression. She thought I was too thin and too dark. However, over time, we grew to appreciate each other more.

From 2000 to 2002, our family of three temporarily lived at my parents-in-law's house while we waited for the new house to be completed. Every morning, I see them kneeling on their beds and praying, which has become an integral part of their lives.

Looking back on her life, the verses from 2 Samuel 22:4 and 7, which suitably capture her strong faith and resilience. Verse 4 says, " I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, " and verse 7 says, “In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I called." Her steadfast prayers sustained her through every trial.

My mother-in-law worked as a market stall holder selling pre-prepared foods her whole life. In her late 50s, she faced bankruptcy due to her son's business failure. To repay debts, she worked as an herb-treatment-bath-tub cleaner and tissue paper production packer for several years despite her serious diabetes. The loss of her elder son to a stroke was particularly painful for her. She attended worship services regularly till she was finally bedridden early this year. Her faith in the Lord was remarkable.

As I read the story of King David in 2 Samuel chapter 22, I see similarities in the difficulties they both faced and their strong belief in God's help. Just like David, my mother-in-law found comfort and strength in her connection with God, especially when things got tough.

Reflecting on the chapter, verse 8-20 illustrates God's responsiveness to our prayers, while verses 22-24 emphasize the importance of obedience in our relationship with God. David acknowledges that God rewards those who walk in his ways and keep his commandments. As the chapter progresses, we see David's acknowledgment of God's faithfulness and deliverance in his life.

In essence, 2 Samuel 22 encourages us to trust in God sovereignty, rely on His mercy, and remain faithful to him, knowing that he hears our prayers and remains steadfast to those who put their trust in him.

Prayer : Dear father, thank you for the assurance that you hear our prayers and remain steadfast to those who put their trust in you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
