In Numbers 30, the central theme is encapsulated in verse 2: " If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.".

The story of Russell Kelso Carter (1849-1928) embodies this message aptly. Although he was a faithful Christian for most of his life, it was a serious heart attack that really made him realize the power of the promise of the Bible.

At the age of 30, Carter's health deteriorated so badly that doctors could do nothing. In a moment of desperation, he turned to God for help, making a solemn commitment to give his life to the Lord no matter what happened.

Since then, Carter has come to believe in the promises of the Bible. Incredibly, he experienced a miraculous recovery and gained another 49 years of good health. But even if he is not cured, he will unswervingly fulfil his promise to God and serve God faithfully until the last moment of his life.

During these life-changing years, Carter's hymn "Standing on the Promises" became a testimony of his unwavering faith in God's promises, guiding him through his journey. The essence of Numbers 30, verse 2, " he shall not break his word" is truly captured in Carter's unwavering commitment.
