All Shall be Blessed

Ps. Lam Yuen Foong

Passage of the day

11:27 Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran fathered Lot. 28 Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his kindred, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah. 30 Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31 Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there. 32 The days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran.

12:1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Sharing

After the Tower of Babel, the author directed our attention to the descendant of Shem, Terah. Apparently, God wanted to find a solution after seeing how men in their unity went against God. He seems to have found a solution through one of the sons of Terah, Abram. When Terah died in Haran, God spoke to Abram and wanted him to go to the promised land. God intended to bless the families of the earth through Abram.

So God's solution is not through mass evangelism of any kind. Instead, he wanted to start small. Through one individual, one family, one nation to bless all the families of the earth. We later learnt that Jesus came from the descendants of Abraham. That is how the world could be saved. However, when God said to bless all the families of the earth, He did not seem to refer to the salvation of Jesus alone. He appears to be referring to the lives of Abraham and all his descendants. God chose one family, one nation, as an example for the entire mankind.

Similarly, today He chose the Christian community to set an example to the rest of the world. The question is, have we set a good example? Are our lives what God is proud of in showing others? Are we living the lives that will bring blessing to others?

I pray that we shall continue to be blessed, and our lives shall be a blessing to others.
