Walk in God’s light

Ps. Liu Yimei

Passage of the day

5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Without a doubt, the main message that John is conveying is that “God is light”. And if God is light, then there is no darkness in God. Therefore, if we walk in darkness, then we cannot be walking with and in Him. Conversely, if we walk in the light, then we are walking with Him.

God is light – This means that God is pure, perfect and utterly righteous. Light is revealing and unveils our spiritual identity. Light identifies whether we abide in the Son or whether we live in darkness. Therefore, light has a judging function.

The opposite of light is darkness. Darkness is the represented by the evil one, it also is wrong doctrine, sin in all its forms, the denial of the truth of God, and prohibition of God’s light to enter. In fact, darkness is where God’s glory cannot be found. God stands in contrast to darkness, to evil, to error, to imperfection. Therefore, if we profess to be walking in the light then we cannot be walking in darkness. Yet, we are so capable of being in darkness through our fallen choices, our deception and our sinfulness. What is worse is that, sometimes, we get so used to being in darkness that we forget what being in the light really is.

Dear brothers and sisters, are you living in God’s light or are you living in darkness? Imagine the Christian life to be like that of a circle of light on a stage. That spot of light is obvious and prominent, and a clear boundary is formed against the darkness surrounding it. The light cannot mix with the darkness. The light is clearly differentiated from darkness. Would you choose to step from the darkness into the light? This light that represents the Christian life is pure, revealing and guiding. It is also humbling, healing, renewing, and enlivening. Would you be willing to fellowship with others who live in the light? Would you be willing to bring those in the darkness into this circle of light? God is light, therefore, walk in His light.
