Sharing Love
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
In the eyes of John, Jesus is not just another great teacher. He is the Logos, the Word, that brings life, and through Him, we have eternal life. John and his companions were so fortunate to see and experience His presence. How could they keep mum anymore? John wanted to share excellent knowledge that will bring eternal lives to all who receive the testimony. As a result, they will all rejoice greatly through their fellowship with God and one another.
Similarly, we, too, have God’s precious knowledge and experience. By sharing it with our loved ones, they too shall greatly rejoice with us till eternity. So, what prevents us from sharing?
I can think of two reasons. Firstly, we felt that we do not have enough knowledge to share. However, we do not have to tell what we do not know. We simply tell them what we know and why we choose this faith. If our loved ones ask us questions which we cannot answer, tell them that we do not know and refer them to people who may know.
Secondly, we fear that our approach may spoil our relationship with our loved ones. I think such an assumption is unfounded. How can we assume our relationship to be so fragile? Besides, if these are our loved ones, would not we want to give them the best? If love is sacrificial, would we not be willing to bear some slight discomfort by telling them how they could acquire eternal lives?
Spend some time thinking of people whom you would like to enjoy the eternal fellowship with. Ask yourself how you could help? Say a short prayer for each of them.
