Living in an Unjust World

On April 5, 2025, the President of the United States, the leader of the world's largest economy, imposed new tariffs on all other countries. While he has the power to do so, what has shocked many is how he responded when some countries tried to negotiate lower tariffs with him. He reportedly mocked them brutally and publicly.
This is not only a political issue, but also an example of injustice. When those in power treat others unfairly, it shows how broken the world is. It is a world where “the big fish eat the little fish.” It reminds us of Job's experience in Job 16.
Job was a good man. He had done nothing wrong, but he had lost everything, his health, his wealth, and his family. He felt crushed, and worst of all, his friends didn't understand him. Instead, they blamed him for his own suffering.
Job felt that even God was against him. He felt confused and hurt. He could not understand why this was happening to him. To Job, it was totally unfair and unjust.
Sometimes we feel the same way. We do our best, work hard, and live honestly, but life is still hard. Bad things happen for no clear reason.
The truth is that we are living in a broken world. It is broken by sin and injustice. But the story of Job teaches us something more important: there is more to life than ease or comfort. Our true purpose is to know and trust God, even when life is hard.
In verse 21, Job says, “that he would argue the case of a man with God, as a son of man does with his neighbour.” Job wanted someone to speak to God on his behalf, someone who could help him get justice. Today, we know that person is Jesus. He speaks to God for us. He defends us. He understands our pain and stands with us (Romans 8:34).
Reflection : Are you facing something that feels unfair? Are you discouraged by the injustices around you? Remember this: God sees your pain and Jesus is speaking for you. He is your helper, your advocate. In this unfair world, hold on to God, who is always just and full of love.
Prayer : Dear Father, sometimes life feels so unfair. Bad things happen even when we try to do what’s right. Help us not to give up. Thank you for sending Jesus to stand with us and speak for us. Teach us to trust you and to bring comfort to others who are hurting. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
