Logically Wrong

In verses 1-16, Eliphaz poses a series of thought-provoking questions. How can a wise man utter such foolish statements? Where is the reverence for God? Your own words condemn you. Are you the firstborn? Do you listen to God? Do you keep your wisdom to yourself? We possess the same knowledge as any other person. There are older and wiser individuals among us. Is God incapable of comforting us to the point that we would turn away from Him? Is any man born blameless? If God does not place His trust in His holy ones, how can He trust those born in sin?
Logical reasoning leads to logical conclusions, but when it comes to matters of faith, we cannot rely solely on logic. If so, it would lead to denying the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus, matters of faith may not always align with logic. This is why we need to have faith.
Consequently, we often speak foolishly and condemn ourselves with our words. We may believe ourselves to be wise and speak too much. We do not fear or listen to God. We share the same knowledge as others, yet we think we know better. In essence, we are prideful and hold an inflated view of ourselves. We must humble ourselves and repent of our pride.
Human wisdom is not infinite. People tend to speak foolishly, thereby condemning themselves with their words. There are wiser individuals, but they do not follow them or obey God. If God does not trust His holy ones, how much more can He trust mere mortals?
In verses 17-35, Eliphaz tells Job that he will reveal what he has to say. It is the wicked who suffer for their actions. One can hear the cries of the wicked in their suffering when the destroyer inflicts pain upon them. They do not believe they will live, as they are destined to die by the sword. They wander in search of food, fully aware that their death is imminent.
They are distressed and fearful, knowing they will be defeated because they have disobeyed God. They have stubbornly opposed Him. They have become complacent in their appearance and in their lives. They inhabit places that are desolate and ruined. Their wealth will not endure, and their possessions will be scattered across the earth. They will die and not live.
They should not place their trust in such things and deceive themselves, or they will be repaid in full. They will not thrive but will be like unripe grapes or blossoms that fall from the olive tree. Associating with godless individuals will leave them barren, and fire will consume the houses of bribery. They will only encounter trouble and give birth to evil through their deceit.
Evil will be repaid with punishment, but this may not always be immediate, as we sometimes observe the wicked prospering instead of suffering. Similarly, the righteous may suffer rather than prosper. Not everything will always make sense or be as straightforward as it appears. This calls for faith. Many aspects of life do not align with our understanding or expectations. This is why we need to embrace humility, not be proud, and refrain from relying solely on our knowledge or human wisdom.
Prayer: Dear God, grant me the faith to believe in what I cannot comprehend or when logic fails to align with what I know or see. Teach me to be humble and to continue trusting in You, rather than allowing my knowledge and wisdom to hinder my faith in You.
