Did you watch the second season of Physical 100, a Korean reality show that was trending on Netflix. One of the challenges was navigating a maze with a clock that was ticking. 10 teams of 5 went head to head in a competition for their survival and a spot of being the top 25 contestants to advance. Employing a winning strategy was paramount to the success of the team. Any wrong move or careless decision could potentially cause a downward spiral, losing precious minutes in what would determine the outcome. The thought of navigating a maze can be nerve-wrecking, causing fear and anxiety. How one wrong turn could lead you to another, ultimately finding yourself lost while trying to retrace your steps.

Using the imagery of navigating a maze, do you wonder what the account of David would be, had he not made a couple of wrong turns? Let us visit the scripture. May God bless the reading of His word and guide our thoughts.

The first wrong turn in the maze happened when David remained in Jerusalem, while his troops were out in battle against the Ammonites.

  • Would David not have been tempted should he had followed the troops to battle?

He got up from his couch and began to walk on the roof. At this moment he saw Bathsheba. His eyes were tempted, captivated by her beauty he sent and inquired about her. One replied saying that she was a wife to Uriah. David began his downward spiral, ignoring the fact that she was married. He decided to give in to the desires of the flesh and sleep with her.

  • Why didn’t David follow the footsteps of Joseph, who fled when forced to sleep with Potiphar’s wife?

In an attempt to cover his sins, David devised a ploy against Uriah on multiple occasions to have him sleep with his wife Bathsheba. Finally when all else failed, he resorted to having Uriah killed on the battlefield.

  • What would have happened if David came clean to Uriah and sought forgiveness from him and God?

Idleness is the beginning to all vices, the bible reminds us of an on-going spiritual warfare. Satan knows our weaknesses and tempts us. Our temptations are manifested differently for all of us, each tailored to our weak spots. Satan plans to set us up for failure. However, there is a silver lining for us as modern day Christians. Through the life of David we can see neither instant nor prolonged gratification of our flesh pleases God.

We are obligated as His disciples to follow Christ in our lives, denying ourselves and picking up the cross and follow Him. We are surrounded by a loving community of believers whom we can be accountable towards. Bearing ourselves to know none of us are perfect, willing to extend grace and admonishing in love. For we are children of light, children of the day. We have been given the luxury to study the lives of biblical characters, they serve as a Birds Eye view for us to study the maze well. Avoiding potential wrong turns or pitfalls as we navigate this life. May we be encouraged to hold fast till Christ returns.

Prayer : Dear Heavenly Father, before you I bear myself in full surrender. You are my maker, Lord you know my very being, the known and unknown sins. I humbly ask for your forgiveness of my sins. Lord, I desire for your presence, strength and the leading of the Holy Spirit to live a life worthy of your call. Mold me and shape me to be resilient in my belief, that I can stand the test when it is brought upon me that I may glorify you. In Jesus' precious name, I pray amen.
