When grace is not grace

David’s household had been in chaos since the sin of adultery that David committed. By this chapter, David’s son Absalom had killed his brother, Amnon, for raping his sister, Tamar. Not only was Absalom not disciplined, he was allowed to get away. David had remained inactive when he heard of Amnon’s rape of Tamar, and continued to be inactive when Absalom killed Amnon. David seemed to be incapable of disciplining his children.

Being fully aware of David’s desire to see Absalom (verse 1), Joab used yet another story, through the Tekoite woman, to evoke David’s judgement. David is then forced to reconsider his own position on Absalom, where he allowed Absalom to return to Jerusalem. However, David continues to leave Absalom unpunished, and in so doing, Absalom nearly brings down David’s kingdom. David’s failure to discipline his children brings about more harm than if he had.

Absalom showed a lack of repentance, and David’s grace to him without his repentance is in fact not grace. In a time when David should be disciplining and showing Absalom the right way, he showed grace, leaving Absalom in his rebellion.

Lest we think that discipline is unnecessary, Proverbs 3:12 reminds us that, “the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.” Discipline is necessary because it shows our children the desires of God. Discipline is necessary because it sets healthy boundaries, and prevents our children from doing whatever they please. Discipline is necessary because it is the better way to love as compared to loving through doting and pampering.

Likewise, God is a God of love, but also a God of justice. Where there is sin, He needs to punish. Where there is repentance, He will be gracious. Sin has to be dealt with in a way such that our relationship will be reconciled with God. And when there is true repentance, it will be met with true forgiveness.

Prayer : Dear Lord, thank you, that you are a God of love, and a God of justice. Forgive us of those times when we rebelled against you. Help us to walk according to your will and way. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
