Looking to God

The wall was almost finished, there was no breach left, and what was left was the setting up of the doors in the gates. However, even as works on the walls continued, criticisms and oppositions continued. Those who had challenged Nehemiah continued to do so, in order to stop the work.
However, Nehemiah showed discernment each time he was challenged. He did not cease the work to go to Ono, refusing to be distracted from his work. He did not allow the slanderous words of Sanballat to cause fear in his heart, instead he prayed for God’s strength. He did not believe in Shemaiah’s religious talk, and was committed in his obedience to God.
Nehemiah certainly faced much opposition as he worked on the wall. However, he never once turned away from God, and constantly looked toward God. Just as Billy Graham once said, “The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, ‘O God, forgive me, or help me.”
And Nehemiah completed the rebuilding of the walls. The walls had laid in ruins for more than 100 years, but Nehemiah saw the need. He prayed for the works for four months, and it took only 52 days to rebuild the wall. Nehemiah did not just turn to God while working. His eyes were on God even before the works started. He worked longer in prayer than in the actual time needed to complete the job.
Do we engage in prayers before we begin projects, discussions, ministry? Very often, we engage in an “opening prayer”, treating it as if it is an opening statement. However, how often are we on our knees, to really discern the will of God and to surrender our works to Him? God will grant us discernment as He gave to Nehemiah to be able to stay on track with Him. God will give us the strength and confidence to complete what the works He has called us to do. What is one thing that you need to be on your knees for? What is one step you can take to prepare your heart for any opposition or challenge that may come your way?
Prayer: Dear God, I submit ________________ (think about one thing you need to bring before God), help me when I am discouraged, grant me the strength and confidence to complete it, and may the works of my hands bring glory to you. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
