Rebuilding the Community for God’s Purpose
Although the Israelites completed the rebuilding of the Temple and the walls of Jerusalem in Nehemiah chapter 7, the real purpose of the rebuilding was not merely physical restoration. Rather, it was intended to restore Israel's identity, worship, and spiritual life. Jerusalem will be a place where God will be glorified, where people can live in God's way and be a light to the nations. The list of returnees reinforced this profound purpose.
As we read this, we need to think about our own churches. Like Nehemiah's efforts to bring the exiled Israelites back to Jerusalem, we can't help but ask ourselves: where are our people? Why do we have so many empty seats? Each empty seat is a reminder of the reason we plant and rebuild churches. We need to restore community, spiritual life, and the mission of the church.
Nehemiah knew who to invite back to Jerusalem. Do we know who we are inviting? Have we taken the initiative to invite others to come, to be part of the church, to grow in faith together? Just as the return of the Israelites was the proof of God's faithfulness, the return of people to church signifies revival.
Let us reflect on the mission to which we are called in this process. May we actively participate in building a spiritual fellowship of love and acceptance. Let us extend the love of Christ to those around us, encourage them to return to church, and work together to build a body of Christ that glorifies God.
Prayer : Dear Father, just as you helped Nehemiah rebuild Jerusalem, please help us rebuild our church community. Open our eyes to see those who need to hear your call. Help us to invite them and share your love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
