Chapter 7 of the Book of Esther records the event that God prepared Esther for in Chapter 2. God made her to become a queen so she could save His people from evil men like Haman. In this chapter, God fulfilled His plan. The ten verses record for us what happened and how Haman died for trying to plot against God’s people.
It begins with the king and Haman attending the banquet Esther prepared for them. It was the second day of the banquet, and they were drinking when the king asked Esther about the request she made earlier. He promised to give her whatever she asked even half of his kingdom. Esther said if she had found favor from the king, please give her back her life, and spare her people as she said that she and her people have been sold. If they were sold as slaves, she would not trouble the king, but they were sold to be killed.
The king asked her who was this man that dared to do such a thing. Esther pointed out that it was Haman to the king. He was their enemy. Haman became terrified before the king and queen. The king was so mad that he left the room to go to the garden. Haman realized that the king had already decided the death sentence for him, so he stayed to beg Esther to save him instead of going after the king to beg for his life.
Just then the king returned to the room and in a frantic manner Haman fell on the couch where Esther was reclining. The king mistook it as he was trying to take advantage of his queen. He shouted at him and accused him of molesting the queen in her house with the king present in the room. As soon as the king finished saying those words, they covered Haman's face. Harbona, the king's eunuch told the king that Haman had made a pole that was fifty cubits high standing at his house that was meant to impale Mordecai with it. The king told him to impale Haman instead. They did as the king said and the king's anger subsided. Haman did not expect his plot to fail or to backfire. Thus, instead of hoping that the king would impale Mordecai with it, the king impaled him on it and honored Mordecai instead. The sovereign God used a sleepless night to have the king find out that he had not done anything for the man who had saved him in Chapter 2. While God used Esther to expose Haman’s plot to annihilate His people in Chapter 7.
Evil men can and will plot against God’s people, but God can thwart their plans and plots to favor and protect His people. Esther’s story shows that God can orchestrate things to turn around to make Haman become the victim instead of the perpetrator. Ironically, Haman also prepared the way how he was going to die for himself as he plotted against God’s people. There is nothing God cannot do to save us.
He showed us that He would even send His own Son to die for our sins. This is how far God would go to save us from our enemies. Praise the Lord! Be faithful and true to worship Him with thanksgiving for all that He has done for us. God’s plan is meant to prosper us, not harm us; and he uses us to fulfill His plan as well. Will you let Him use you?
Prayer: O Lord, help me to be faithful and true in my worship of you as our God. You will protect us from our enemies just as you have protected your people in the story of Esther. I will not only trust that you will fulfill your plan in our lives but also be willing to be used by you to fulfill it too. Use me as your instrument to bless others as well.
