Faithful Stewardship

Following the celebration of the Passover, Hezekiah reorganized the duties of the priests and Levites, making sure that each office had a specifically related priestly task. Hezekiah then set an example by offering his own possessions as burnt offerings before commanding the people of Israel to do likewise. All of this was done according to the instructions taught by God. All were of one mind to keep God's law. Because of the large cumulative quantity of offerings, Hezekiah had to be involved in managing the proper distribution of the offerings to the Levites and their families.
This is in stark contrast to King Ahaz's previous reign. We learn from 2 Chronicles 28 that during his time, King Ahaz, whose family was wealthy, chose to turn his back on God and close the temple. As a result, the priests and Levites had nothing to live for and the temple was abandoned. Now Hezekiah restored worship to the temple (v. 2) and offering was also restored. In this chapter we see clearly that when people give generously, God rewards them generously.
2 Chronicles 31 shows us the responsibilities of a faithful steward. Indeed, we must first set an example, then encourage believers to give faithfully, and more importantly, steward the offering with wisdom and integrity. Offering should be used to support God's work.
Reflection:
Are we giving faithfully? Offering is more than a basic responsibility of the believer; offering is a response to God's faithfulness. When we give, we recognize that everything we have comes from God and is for His kingdom.
Like Hezekiah, are we leading by example and encouraging others to give faithfully together as well?
Are we good stewards of God resources? Like Hezekiah, we should ensure that the church's offerings are used appropriately, and that God's will be carried out faithfully. Hezekiah's faithful stewardship allowed the Levites and priests to focus on their mission, which reminds us of that faithful stewardship of resources can have a profound impact on God's work.
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for Hezekiah's example of faithful stewardship. Teach us to give faithfully and to use our resources wisely for your glory. May we be faithful stewards, upholding your work and encouraging others to do the same. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
