The Bumps of Life
2 Chronicles 35:20 to 36:23 gives us a sense of the ups and downs of our spiritual life. King Josiah's experience shows us that even in obedience to God, we may stray from the right path because of a little pride in our hearts. People always tend to overestimate themselves and think they can accomplish great things, but often forget to rely on God at such times.
Kings such as Jehoiakim, Jehoiachim, and Zedekiah are living examples. They were too proud and thought they were exceptional, but they eventually failed because of rebellion and stubbornness. Isn't this a reflection of us? We often carry pride and rebellion, thinking that we don't need God, but end up making a mess of our lives.
However, God is always full of mercy. Even when the Israelites were taken into captivity in Babylon for turning their backs on God, God still did not abandon them. He gave them the opportunity to return through Cyrus king of Persia. This reminds us that no matter how much we fail, if we are willing to return to God, he will always give us a chance.
This passage tells us that the life of a believer is a process of constantly falling, learning humility, and then being pulled back by God. God will use various experiences to shape us, with the intention that we will learn to be humble and follow him by his grace. May we all remember not to turn away from God because of pride or rebellion, but always humbly walk on the path he guides us.
Prayer : Dear Father, forgive us for our pride and rebellion. Thank You for your unchanging grace and mercy, which always call us back to you. Teach us to trust in your will and to walk humbly in your ways. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
