Trust God amid Conflict and Difficulty
Click here to read Deuteronomy 20
The lessons of Deuteronomy 20 are still relevant today, emphasizing the importance of trusting God when we face conflict or difficulty, just as the Israelites did during the war. Life throws us different challenges that often make us feel fearful or uncertain. However, we can draw inspiration from the Israelites, whose strength came from trusting God. By trusting in God’s guidance and strength, we find comfort in knowing that we are never alone.
In our modern world, Deuteronomy 20:1-9 reminds us that no matter how serious the problems we face or the uncertainty we face, we can find strength and peace by maintaining faith in the wisdom of the Almighty. This passage serves as a reminder to place our trust in the Lord (v1), approach challenges with compassion (v5-8), and rely on the strength provided by God (v3, 4).
Pay Attention to God's Guidance
Deuteronomy 20:10-20 provides the Israelites with valuable guidance on how to navigate warfare while remaining faithful to God’s teachings and obediently listening to His wisdom.
Today, these timeless lessons are not only used on the battlefield, but also become our compass for cultivating Christian faithfulness and kindness. This passage inspires us to uphold justice in our actions (v10), handle conflicts with wisdom and grace (v11, 12), attentively heed God's voice (v13-18), and think about the long-term consequences of our actions during difficult times (v19, 20). It requires that we always choose righteousness and faithfully follow God's guidance when faced with life's trials and tribulations.
Note:
In Deuteronomy 20:16, we can refer to verses 7:23-24, which describe how the Israelites utterly destroyed all the people, leaving no survivors. This action was taken against the Amorites, who were part of a people that God had determined should be completely removed. The Israelites were, therefore, given a specific mandate to eradicate this group from Canaan. (Source: The Pulpit Commentaries, Deuteronomy)
