For the Worship of God

Chapter 7 introduces Ezra, a priest cum scribe sent by God to lead the people of Israel in spiritual renewal. Although the Temple had been rebuilt years earlier, the people’s hearts had drifted away from true worship. This passage reminds us that external restoration, like the construction of the Temple, is not enough without a renewed commitment to God’s word and ways.
Ezra is described as a man who “set his heart to study the law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach it.” He understood that true worship begins with a heart fully devoted to God's truth. Spiritual decline often happens gradually - when we neglect scripture, prayer and faithful obedience. The Israelites faced such a decline when they compromised by intermarrying with pagan nations, which led them away from God's holiness (Ezra 9). God raised up Ezra to lead his people back to him by restoring proper worship and teaching his law.
As a scribe and priest, Ezra should have had a decent life. Yet, he chose to give up a comfortable life to take on a difficult mission. We know that this path is challenging, as we have seen from the experiences of other leaders such as Zerubbabel. Ezra’s courage came from God’s help, as he himself said in Ezra 7:28: “I took courage, for the hand of the Lord my God was on me, .” Ezra took the first step in faith, and God responded with his abundant grace.
Ezra's mission highlights the importance of centering our lives and communities on God's word. His story makes us reflect on our own spiritual priorities. Are we committed to studying, living and sharing God's truth? Are we guarding against complacency creeping in?
True worship involves not only outward behaviour, but also a heart that is fully aligned with God's will. Just as Ezra endeavoured to teach and lead others, we are called to live out our faith and share it with those around us, bringing renewal to our families, churches, and communities.
Prayer : Dear Father, thank you for the example of Ezra, who gave himself to your word and faithfully led others in worship. Help us to guard against complacency and to be steadfast in our devotion to you. Renew us, Lord, and use us to draw others closer to you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
