Thanking God and Remember His Faithfulness
The story in Nehemiah 12 teaches us two important lessons about how we should view our work and God’s role in it.
Thank God and dedicate to God
When the walls of Jerusalem were completed, the people did more than celebrate their success. They gathered the Levites, singers and priests who had come from all directions and purified themselves, the people, the gates and the walls. They worshiped and thanked God and dedicated the walls to Him.
This tells us that success is more than just getting things done, it's recognizing that God is the God who accomplishes everything. Like the people in Nehemiah's day, we should learn to stop often to thank Him and offer our accomplishments to His glory.
Remember God’s faithfulness
The list of priests and Levites in chapter 12 may seem like normal names, but they are actually a reminder that God is faithful in every generation. The serving believers knew they were only a small part of God’s grand plan. Instead of taking credit, they humbly continued to work, knowing it was all for God’s glory.
This teaches us to honour those who came before us and to be faithful to God in what we do now. We must trust God to see us through to the future. We work not for fame or money, but to be part of God’s greater plan.
What does this mean for us?
• Be thankful: When we accomplish something, no matter how big or small, we should stop to thank God and give Him the credit.
• Stay humble: Remember that we are part of a larger faith story. What we do today is a continuation of the work started by others before us, and it is all for God, not for ourselves.
Nehemiah 12 reminds us to celebrate God’s faithfulness and approach all we do with gratitude and humility.
Prayer : Dear Father, thank you for always being faithful. We dedicate our work to you and trust your plan. Please help us to remain thankful and humble. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
