Unveiling the Complexity of Self
In 1 Kings 3, King Solomon asks to God for wisdom in managing the affairs of his country. He asked God to grant him a discerning heart and the ability to judge right and wrong so that he could better govern the country and handle civil disputes. God heard his request and gave him this wisdom. In chapter 3, verses 16 to 23, we see that God fulfils his promise, and chapter 4 also demonstrates God’s faithfulness. In Chapter 4, we see that King Solomon managed his country in good order.
King Solomon’s ways of governance
Assign and delegate his work (4:1-19)
King Solomon managed the affairs of the state by assigning and delegating tasks.
Carefully select the most suitable people (4:1-19)
King Solomon was very careful in selecting his officials to ensure that they had the abilities and qualities to fulfil their duties.
Cares deeply about his people (4:20)
Solomon cared about the quality of life of his people and worked hard to ensure that their lives were prosperous and peaceful.
Have a strong army (4:26)
Solomon had a powerful army, which ensured the security and stability of the country and enhanced the country's prestige.
Good reputation (4:29-31)
Solomon's wisdom and governance ability gave him a high reputation at home and abroad, which not only enhanced his personal reputation but also increased the country's external influence.
Knowledgeable and talented (4:32-34)
Solomon was not only an excellent ruler, but also a learned and talented scholar and poet. His wise words and literary works are still widely praised today.
In the first ten chapters of 1 Kings, we see an almost perfect figure, but in fact in chapter 4, verses 22-23 and 27, we begin to get a feel for Solomon's luxurious lifestyle. Chapter 11 reveals his dissolute life of marrying wives and concubines, with a total of 700 wives and 300 concubines. He had flaws and was a lustful person. Although extremely wise, he could only solve external problems but was powerless in managing himself. This is a common flaw in human nature.
In fact, Proverbs 1:7 written by King Solomon says:
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; a fool despise wisdom and instruction,
has given him the best warning.
As we navigate our own path ahead, let us listen to the wisdom of God, recognize our limitations, and remain humble before God. While acknowledging our imperfections, we seek guidance and strength with humility to walk on the path of wisdom.
Prayer :
Dear Father, we see Solomon’s imperfections and the challenges he faced in managing himself. Teach us that true wisdom begins with fear of you. Help us to recognize our flaws and seek your guidance to grow in humility. In the journey of life, may we always listen to your wisdom and walk on the path of righteousness. Give us the strength to remain humble, the courage to admit our imperfections, and the confidence to trust in your perfect guidance. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
