Crucial role of parenting
By studying 1 Samuel 2:12-36, we genuinely understand the crucial role of parenting in shaping children's lives. This passage vividly shows the sharp contrast between how Eli and Elkanah raised their children. Eli's sons went astray because he didn't provide enough guidance and discipline, leading to disastrous consequences. Eli only recognized the gravity of his sons' actions when he was old, and even then, he failed to take any corrective measures (1 Sam 2:22-25, 3-13). In contrast, Elkanah and Hannah's wholehearted upbringing of Samuel, marked by his deep dedication to God, strongly illustrates how parents can have a transformative impact on their children's spiritual and moral development (1 Sam 1:3, 11, 21-22, 27-28).
The story emphasizes the crucial role of parenting in shaping children's attitudes, behaviours, and ultimately, their destiny. The responsibility of instilling values, nurturing a connection with faith, and providing necessary guidance cannot be overstated. Lessons from 1 Samuel 2:12-36 highlight the lasting influence parents have on their children's character and choices, emphasizing the importance of intentional and nurturing parenting in cultivating responsible and godly individuals.
When my wife and I needed to transition from our home church to serve in another congregation, our main concern was our two sons. Since their infancy, we diligently took them to church every Sunday. When they were very young, people used to tell us that we were strict parents. Our biggest worry was whether they would continue attending church services regularly without our presence. For the past 20 years, they relied on our encouragement, seeing both parents actively involved in church service.
A year after leaving our home church, we were visibly relieved to find that not only did our children continue attending church, but they also actively participated in various ministries.
Indeed, being parents and providing a positive example, including discipline is crucial. The differences in how Elkanah and Hannah raised their children compared to Eli are significant.
Prayer : Dear Father, Thank you for teaching us about the importance of parenting, following 1 Samuel 2:12-36. We ask for strength to instil good values in our children, help them grow in faith, and provide guidance. Assist us in being positive examples and using discipline when necessary. May our parenting reflect the positive differences mentioned in the Bible. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
